The Community Development Department’s (CDD) IT for Teens Programme has received a timely financial boost from corporate Barbados.

Yesterday, LIME presented the department with some $50, 000 to assist with the running of the summer programme which will see young Barbadians aged 13 to18 undergo extensive training?? to sharpen and develop their Information Technology (IT) skills. IT for Teens is part of the CDD’s Community Technology Programme.

Minister of Community Development and Culture, Steve Blackett, received the sponsorship cheque from Chairman of Cable and Wireless Communications, Sir Richard Lapthorne, at the offices of the CDD, 4th Floor, Warrens Office Complex, Warrens, St. Michael.

Sir Richard also presented a laptop to the Minister which will be awarded to the best student in the six week IT programme.

Coordinator of IT for Teens, Bridgette Marshall, revealed there was a tremendous response to the summer programme, with many young Barbadians eagerly waiting to sign up.

She said the CDD had received some 30 applications at the St. Christopher Resource Centre in Christ Church alone and would soon be commencing its recruitment process.

Campers for the IT for Teens will be spread across the island at several community and resource centres including Speightstown in St. Peter, Bonnetts and Deacons in St. Michael, Rices in St. Philip, Weston in St. James and St. Christopher in Christ Church.

The centres are also part of LIME’s Connect Barbados programme, which seeks to provide access to the internet and information technology in communities across Barbados.??askeete@barbados.gov.bb
