To celebrate World Telecommunication and Information Society Day on May 17, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) today donated five computers to The Alleyne School in St. Andrew.

Area representative for the ITU, Cleveland Thomas, said that the donation was the first of a number which will be made to schools in Barbados in recognition of the strides the country has made in the area of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).

He noted that Barbados was ranked number one in the Caribbean and number three in the Americas in the ICT index measurement, with only Canada and the United States outranking the island.

He said that the ITU would be assessing how the equipment was utilised, and promised that further assistance in this area would be forthcoming.

Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Senator Harry Husbands, thanked the ITU for the equipment, noting that it was particularly welcomed because of the challenges now being experienced with equipment donated under the Edutech programme, much of which was either obsolete or not working.

He told the Information Technology students witnessing the presentation that the best way for them to show their gratitude for the donation was to put the equipment to the best use possible, and also to ensure that they took care of it so that it could be passed on for use by other students.

The presentation was also witnessed by Principal of The Alleyne School, Julia Beckles; Chief Telecommunications Officer, Reginald Bourne; and ITU representative, Sylvester Cadet.
