Jamaican, Dr. Luke St. Patrick Foster is the latest Commonwealth Caribbean recipient of the prestigious Rhodes scholarship.

The 23 year-old aspiring surgeon and medical intern at Cornwall Regional Hospital was chosen from among seven applicants from across the region.

Dr. Foster, who recently completed his medical degree from the University of the West Indies, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Mona, will proceed on a full scholarship to the esteemed Oxford University in October 2011.

Describing his success as a "wonderful opportunity to continue on the path to make an impact in his field," the winner stated he was "extremely grateful to meet a wonderful group of candidates, both here and in Jamaica, and for the amazing experience."

The other applicants hailed from St. Lucia, Belize, Jamaica, the Bahamas and St. Kitts & Nevis.????????????????

The Rhodes scholarship, named after Cecil Rhodes, is an international postgraduate award for study at the University of Oxford, and was the first large-scale programme of international scholarships.??tblackman@barbados.gov.bb
