Matters relating to renewable energy and its benefits to Barbados??? economic development were among the areas discussed, when Japan???s Ambassador, Yoshimasa Tezuka, paid a courtesy call on Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Maxine McClean.

During the meeting last Friday at the Ministry, she commended the Japanese government for providing grant financing of $121,000 to outfit five primary schools with photovoltaic technology.

Senator McClean said the gesture was in keeping with government???s initiatives to reduce the island???s dependence on fossil fuels.??

???Efforts to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels is [an initiative] that government is seriously pursuing and we feel the best way to do that is to lead by example. So, we certainly appreciate the initiative to assist us in that direction,??? she added.

In turn, Ambassador Tezuka said the project would allow students to see the value of renewable energy as a basic human need.

Barbados and Japan established diplomatic ties on August 29, 1967.
