Journalists are invited to apply to the Dag Hammarskjold Fund for its 2012 fellowship programme.

Media professionals, who wish to apply, should operate in radio, television, print or web at a "bona fide" media organisation in a developing country.?? They should be 25 to 35 years of age.??

The fellowship programme is not intended to provide basic skills training to journalists, and practitioners must demonstrate an interest and commitment to international affairs, in addition to a willingness to convey a better understanding of the United Nations (UN) to audiences.??

Applicants should be available to travel to New York to report on international affairs during the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which is scheduled to begin in September and conclude in late November 2012.??

Due to the length of the session, candidates must have approval from their media organisation to stay up to two months in New York to report from the UN.?? The cost of travel, a per diem allowance and accommodation in New York are included in the fellowship.

While only four applicants are selected each year, recipient countries are rotated annually and, as a result, applications for 2012 would not be considered from nations selected the previous year.?? In 2011, participating journalists were selected from China, Ethiopia, India and Nigeria; those countries would be eligible to apply in 2013.

According to officials of the fund, several past fellows "have risen to prominence in their professions and countries" following the fellowship and successful applicants will be able to interact with other seasoned journalists from around the world.

Persons who had been awarded fellowships in the past have benefited tremendously, as they have gained an incomparable opportunity to witness firsthand, international diplomatic deliberations at the UN.

The application deadline is Wednesday, March 30, 2012.?? Journalists who wish to apply should visit http://www.unjournalismfellowship.org/ or contact fellowship@unjournalismfellowship.org for more details on the application process, eligibility and the programme.
