Junior officers from the Ministry of Agriculture will soon have an opportunity to expand their horizons, thanks to a recently signed agreement between the Barbados Government and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

This was revealed by Minister of Agriculture, Senator Haynesley Benn, during a recent visit to a World Food Conference in Italy. During the session, an agreement between Barbados and the FAO regarding the FAO Sub- Regional Office for the Caribbean was signed by Minister Benn and Director General of FAO, Dr. Jacques Diouf.

Mr. Benn said that junior officers in the technical areas covered by the FAO Sub-Regional Office (e.g. fisheries, forestry and plant production) would get the chance to work under the supervision of FAO’s international experts. He added this would enable "them to gain a better understanding of the work of an international organisation, as well as to improve their technical capacities."

Senator Benn also expressed gratitude on behalf of Government and declared he was fully appreciative of the contribution made by the FAO’s office in the promotion of agriculture and food security. He noted ??that the arrangement would prove beneficial with the strengthening of the Ministry through the expert knowledge gained by the officers while on attachment.??tblackman@barbados.gov.bb
