Outstanding squash player, Karen Meakins, is this island’s Sports Personality for 2010.

Chairman of the National Sports Council, Seibert Straughn, made the announcement today, while addressing a press conference at the Council’s "Blenheim", My Lord’s Hill, St. Michael, headquarters.

Chairman of the NSC’s Awards Committee, Andrew Sealy, disclosed that Ms. Meakins was unanimously chosen because of her "consistent performance" during the year.

Ms. Meakins has enjoyed remarkable success this past year, having won a silver medal at the 10th World Squash Federation Masters Squash Championships in Germany, the Ladies Individual title at the 18th Caribbean Area Squash Association’s Senior Championships in St. Vincent and anchored the Ladies Team to a gold medal in the team championships.

She also reached the finals in the Ladies Individuals at the 21st Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Colombia, winning Barbados’ first ever silver medal in squash. She also led the ladies team to a bronze medal in the group event. She played a major part in winning four of the five CAC Games medals (one silver and four bronze) won in squash by this island over the past four years.??

In addition, the squash player recently added the Barbados Olympic Association’s Female Athlete of the Year title to her list of accomplishments.

Outstanding CAC swimmer, Bradley Ally and West Indies/international cricketer, Deandra Dottin, were close contenders for the 2010 Sports Personality title.

Meanwhile, Mr. Sealy disclosed that the Council was not particularly pleased with the level of performance of Barbadian athletes during 2010. He said: "The President of the Barbados Olympic Association [Steve Stoute] did make the point that the BOA was rather disappointed with the performances of Barbadian athletes this year.

So, even though we are very happy that we have been able to award Ms. Meakins as Sports Personality, we are very concern about the overall level of performance of Barbadian athletes."????askeete@barbados.gov.bb
