With the Easter season almost here, Barbadians are again being urged to desist from flying kites in areas in the vicinity of the Grantley Adams International Airport.

Director of the Civil Aviation Department, Anthony Archer, is reminding householders that there is an external three-mile or five-kilometre radius within which kite flying is strictly prohibited. He said this was designed to prevent danger to aircrafts flying at a low altitude.

The restriction extends to the districts of Boarded Hall, St. George; Brereton and Six Roads, St. Philip and Oistins, in Christ Church.

“We always plead with persons, especially in this season, not to fly kites within these restricted areas and to respect the three-mile or five-kilometre radius, since they can pose a danger to low-flying aircrafts,” Mr. Archer said.

The civil aviation official stressed that as usual the department would be seeking the assistance of the Royal Barbados Police Force to get perpetrators to take down any kites being flown in restricted areas.

Reflecting on how birds contributed to the recent Hudson River plane crash in the United States, Mr. Archer implored Barbadians to play their part in making this Easter kite flying season a safe one.
