Barbadians will now be able to learn more about Korean customs and culture thanks to a donation of books to the National Library Service and the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus??? main library.

Second Secretary of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Sang Hoon Lee, handed over several books to Director of the National Library Service (NLS), Annette Smith, and Campus Librarian, Elizabeth Watson, during a ceremony last Friday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Senior Foreign Service Officer in charge of the Europe, Asia and Africa Relations section, Trecia King, said Barbados valued the relationship that had been built with South Korea over the years. She said the bond had resulted in a number of generous donations over time particularly in the areas of education and greening initiatives.

???We see this as helping the development of Barbados in the area of education and we just want to thank the Government of South Korea for its donation,??? Mrs. King added.

In turn, the Second Secretary said that although one could search for information on the internet; books also contained good information that was ???authentic and genuine???.

???So, I am happy to donate these books to the library and I hope that through these books the people of Barbados would get a closer look at Korean culture,??? Mr. Hoon Lee added.

Campus Librarian, Ms. Watson, thanked the Second Secretary for the generous donation and added that students pursuing studies in Art at the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination, would find the books very useful and they would also strengthen the University???s existing programme.

???People who are interested in learning more about Asia would find the books quite exciting. Sometimes, a book is not read from cover to cover, but, it is the quality of the images that people get excited about,??? she underlined.

Meanwhile, NLS Director, Ms. Smith, also expressed gratitude for the donation and noted: ???Over the years we have been getting magazines and I, personally, have found them to be extremely exciting and I know that the public have been very appreciative about the donations. As a national library service, it is our role to expose Barbadians to other cultures as part of our global peace building exercise???,??? she emphasised.
