Minister of Labour, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo??

Issues related to labour legislation and the social partnership were discussed recently, when Minister of Labour, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo met with representatives of the Barbados Employers’ Confederation (BEC) at the Warrens Office Complex.

The BEC was represented at the courtesy call by President, Ian Gooding-Edghill; Second Vice President, Wayne Yearwood; and Executive Director, Colin ???Tony’ Walcott, while Permanent Secretary, Martin Cox and?? Chief Labour Officer (Ag), Vincent Burnett attended on behalf of the Labour Ministry.

Dr. Byer-Suckoo took the opportunity to update the executives on imminent pieces of labour law, including the much-debated Employment Rights Bill and the Safety and Health at Work Act. ??She also informed the party that efforts were under way to revise and harmonise several pieces of pertinent labour legislation including the Shops and Holiday with Pay Acts.

Mr. Gooding Edghill, stated he welcomed this move, since there was some misunderstanding and misinterpretation with regard to such laws.

The President of the BEC also said he would welcome further dialogue on the Employment Rights Bill, since there were some issues which were still of concern to employers.

Minister Byer Suckoo assured him that stakeholders would have another opportunity to discuss any lingering issues they may have with the legislation.????askeete@barbados.gov.bb
