Minister of the Environment, Dr. Denis Lowe

A national campaign that will see a total phasing out of hydrochlofluorocarbons (HCFC refrigerant gases) will be launched tomorrow, Wednesday, July 4, in the Simpson Motors car park, Warrens, St. Michael.

A highlight of the campaign will be the use of a Transport Board bus to promote the message Use Ozone and Climate Friendly Technologies to Protect Our Atmosphere for Generations to Come.

Barbados is in the process of preparing a phase-out management plan that will govern a total discontinuation of HCFC gases presently being used in equipment such as air conditioning systems, freezers and refrigerators.

HCFC is a combination of hydrogen, chlorine, fluorine and carbon and was originally used to replace chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gas, a mixture of chlorine, fluorine and carbons, as it had a shorter life, when exposed to the atmosphere resulting in less potential damage to the ozone.

However, with Barbados being a signatory to the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer, since 1992, it has recognised that refrigerant gases are a primary concern to the ozone layer, and efforts are being made to make it illegal to trade such substances. Minister of the Environment, Dr. Denis Lowe, will attend tomorrow’s launch, which gets under way at 10:00 a.m.
