Barbados will move a significant step closer to reducing its high food import bill when the University of the West Indies, (UWI) Cave Hill Campus??? Centre for Food Security and Entrepreneurship (CFSE) is officially launched next week.

The launch will take place during a three-day conference entitled Cassava in the Caribbean and Latin America, at the 3W???s Oval of the campus from Monday, February 10, until Wednesday, February 12, beginning at 8:00 a.m, each day.

It is being organised by the UWI???s Cave Hill Campus in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Water Resource Management.

Discussions will be targetted at establishing a strategic framework for the sustainable intensification of the cassava industry in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Several local and international keynote speakers will deliver presentations on the status of cassava production, processing and marketing within the region.

The CFSE is also expected to be an important partner in the development of the cassava industry, as it is tasked with the overall mission of solving food security challenges facing client countries in the areas of agriculture and agro-biotechnology.

Ministers of Agriculture from OECS countries will attend the opening ceremony and sign a Memorandum of Understanding in support of the CFSE.
