Students of the University of the West Indies (UWI) are being encouraged to follow in the footsteps of the late Professor Emeritus Arthur Ralph Carnegie.

These comments came from Attorney General and Minister of Home Affairs, Adriel Brathwaite, while delivering the feature address at the UWI’s Law Society’s Cocktail reception last Monday, to pay tribute to the life and work of the late icon.

??"I believe that if there is one thing that you as young students can do in terms of taking his memory forward, is to ensure that when you leave the UWI that there is no doubt of your scholarship.?? I think that you should let that be your honour to the UWI … wherever you go make sure that your degrees be of such that persons would link you with the high level of scholarship that Professor Carnegie and those others who have studied at this institution are very well known for," he said.

Pointing to the academic achievements of the late Professor, the Attorney General challenged law students to work hard to achieve greatness.?? "The scholastic achievements of Professor Carnegie should challenge those of you who are now embarking on a future in the legal profession to purpose in your hearts and minds to emulate this shining exemplar.?? His many awards and accolades reflect the level of diligence with which he approached his academic life," he outlined.

Minister Brathwaite also urged Caribbean Law Students, to research the work of the late Professor.

"He had this ability to see complex legal issues and make them as simple as possible.?? I want to encourage you to find time to read some of his writings even if you are not involved directly now in contract law or international law…take that step and let Professor Carnegie be the first person that you read and be very proud of the scholarship that has developed here in Barbados and throughout the Caribbean," he underscored.

The late Professor Emeritus Arthur Ralph Carnegie received many awards, prizes, and scholarships during his academic career.?? He was a member of the Faculty of Law of the UW I for 40 years, with 36 of them as a Professor.?? He was also the Dean of the Faculty of Law for five terms and Deputy Principal of Cave Hill, UWI, for six years.????
