In recognition of World Diabetes Day, on Wednesday, November 14, the Barbados Diabetes Foundation, the Diabetes Association of Barbados and the Lions Club of Bridgetown will host a lecture/discussion on the topic: “Dealing with Diabetes”.

Persons living with the disease and others considered ‘at risk’ will be afforded the opportunity to learn of options with respect to treatment and prevention when the lecture comes off at the Sherbourne Conference Centre on that day.  It starts at 6:30 p.m.

The lecture will be presented by Dr. Carlisle Goddard, endocrinologist with the Ministry of Health and Chief Executive Officer with the Barbados Diabetes Foundation.  He is also President of the Lions Club of Bridgetown.

Diabetes is a chronic, debilitating and costly disease associated with major complications that pose severe risks for many families. Barbados is thought to have one of the highest per capita ratios of diabetes.

At present, there is no cure for diabetes, and it is the third leading cause of death by disease. Awareness can prevent the development of Type II Diabetes and can save lives.  Currently, one in 10 Barbadians has diabetes and still more are at risk of developing Type II Diabetes. It is one of the fastest growing health issues of the 21st Century and its rate is predicted to double by 2025, according to the World Health Organisation.

Prior to the start of the lecture, from 5:30 p.m., there will be free blood sugar and blood pressure testing.
