The link between the sugar revolution in Barbados in the 1640’s and emigration will be explored next week, when, the Barbados Museum and Historical Society hosts the first lecture in its series Emigration From Barbados.
The presentation by Professor Thomas Loftfield entitled Gaining Ground, will take place on Tuesday, February 23, at the Grande Salle of the Tom Adams Financial Centre, starting at 7:30 p.m.
The other speakers for the series will be Dr. Karl Watson on Tuesday, March 2; Dr. Lennox Honychurch on Tuesday, March 9; Dr. Alana Johnson on Tuesday, March 16; Dr. Henderson Carter on Tuesday, March 23; and Dr. Cecelia Karch on Tuesday, March 30.
The series continues in April with a lecture by Dr. Marcia Burrowes on Tuesday April 6, while on the following Tuesday, April 13, it will be the turn of Dr. Andrew Downes, who will speak on the topic, Managed Migration from Barbados: The Temporary Worker Programme in Canada & USA. Worrell will conclude the series with a presentation on the topic, "Migration and the Barbadian Standard of Living" on Tuesday, April 20.
All lectures begin at 7:30 p.m. The first nine lectures will be held in the Grande Salle of the Tom Adams Financial Centre, while the final presentation will take place at the Barbados Workers’ Union headquarters, Solidarity House, Harmony Hall, St. Michael.
