Local emigration trends from the mid 17th century to present day, will "come under the microscope" when the Barbados Museum and Historical Society’s new lecture series "Emigration From Barbados," commences this month.

The first presentation will be done by Principal of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, on Tuesday, February 16.?? He will focus on the role of emigration in Barbados’ historical experience.

The other speakers are Professor Thomas Loftfield, who will present on Tuesday, February 23, Dr. Karl Watson on Tuesday, March 2; Dr. Lennox Honychurch on Tuesday, March 9; Dr. Alana Johnson on Tuesday, March 16; Dr. Henderson Carter on Tuesday, March 23; and Dr. Cecelia Karch on Tuesday, March 30.

The series continues in April, with a lecture by Dr. Marcia Burrowes on Tuesday April 6, while on the following Tuesday, April 13, it will be the turn of Dr. Andrew Downes.?? He will speak on the topic, "Managed Migration from Barbados: The Temporary Worker Programme in Canada & the USA."

Central Bank Governor, Dr. Delisle Worrell will conclude the series, with a presentation on the topic, "Migration and the Barbadian Standard of Living" on Tuesday, April 20.

All lectures begin at 7:30 p.m. The first nine lectures will be held in the Grande Salle of the Tom Adams Financial Centre. The final presentation will take place at the Barbados Workers’ Union headquarters, Solidarity House, Harmony Hall, St. Michael.
