In commemoration of 162 years of public service to Barbados, the National Library Service will be staging a number of activities to promote literacy this month.

There will be a workshop featuring readings in early literacy development for government and private day care nurseries. It takes place on Tuesday, December 8, at the National Library Service, Fairchild Street, the City, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.

The organisation’s annual Christmas party will be held at the Geriatric Hospital, on Friday, December 11, from 2:00 to 4:30 p.m. and the Christmas Lighting Ceremony and Police Band concert will be staged on Monday, December 14, at Tamarind Hall Branch Library from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.

The highlight of the month will be a concert on Saturday, December 19, in Jubilee Gardens, the City. It will feature: the Barbados Landship, Sing Out Barbados, New Horizons Models, Dancin’ Africa and the St. Leonard’s Boys’ Drama Group.

Other acts will include: the Mighty Gabby, John King, Winston Farrell, and Antoine Williams. There will also be traditional story telling, speechifiers, scrubbers and renditions from the staff of the National Library Service. The Master of Ceremonies will be Mac Fingall.

Children will be treated to Christmas parties at branch libraries. These will be held on Friday, December 18, at Gall Hill, St. John, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.; the Valley, St. George, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. On Saturday, December 19, at Holetown from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon; and at Speightstown, from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m.; and Eagle Hall on Monday, December 21, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.

The month of celebrations will conclude with a Christmas raffle on Monday, December 21, at Tamarind Hall Branch library, Eric Holder Municipal Complex, Blackman’s St. Joseph.
