Despite this year’s delay, the lighting ceremony continues to be a "flagship" of the Independence celebrations.

This was underscored by Minister of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, as he addressed the media at the Ministry’s Warrens office, earlier today.

Mr. Lashley was at the time accepting a donation of $25,000. from Executive Vice President of Sagicor Life Incorporated, Vince Yearwood, for the ceremony, which takes place this evening at 5:30 p.m., at National Heroes Square in the City.

The Minister said that the changed date was due to the death of the late Prime Minister, David Thompson, followed by the passage of tropical storm Tomas. He stated, however, that the Ministry was "determined to press ahead with the ceremony", despite the setbacks.

"We are still having this ceremony, because Barbadians are still looking forward to the event…we believe that this will lift the spirits of Barbadians," the Culture Minister stated.

Minister Lashley further disclosed that due to technical issues, some of the roundabouts would be lit at a later date.??sharifa.medford@barbados.gov.bb
