Several teens across the island will once again be instructed on various aspects of information technology during the summer, thanks to a continued partnership between the Ministry of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development and LIME (Barbados) Telecommunications Ltd.

To this end, LIME has donated approximately BDS$70,000 to the initiative, which is expected to cover the cost of running the programme, prizes, T-shirts and other incidentals associated with it.

Receiving a cheque from LIME yesterday at his Ministry???s Warrens, St. Michael location, Minister of Social Care, Steven Blackett, thanked that company and noted that the IT for Teens Summer Programme was one which had proven beneficial for participating adolescents, many of whom face various psycho-social and economic challenges.

???The final projects submitted by groups and individuals all continue to exceed our expectations with regard to the potential of youngsters. Their creativity is tapped; team work and cooperation are enhanced; self-expression and interpersonal skills are also honed, as the participants work on their projects in a positive and supportive environment,??? he explained.

Minister Blackett added that the training, which will start next Monday, July 21, at 12 Community Resource Centres across the island will focus on Computer Graphics, Web Page Design and Microsoft Office.

???Computer training will be interspersed as usual with sensitisation to current affairs, national and social issues like business development for economic stability, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, crime and violence and environmental and safety issues. Options for choosing a career, especially those options available via the internet will be presented throughout the programme,??? Mr. Blackett added.

Training will last for six weeks, ending on Friday, August 29.
