Ten-year-old Abigail Bryan is Barbados’ representative in the finals of this year’s Conde Nast Traveler “My Caribbean” Essay Contest.

The student of the Luther Thorne Memorial Primary School wrote about the natural beauty of Greenland, St. Andrew, which she and her mother discovered while hiking.

Abigail and a chaperone have been invited by Conde Nast Traveler to attend the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO-31) Conference which is scheduled to take place in Trinidad and Tobago from October 26 to 28.

According to an official at the Ministry of Tourism, there has been a steady increase in the popularity of the essay contest. “It has grown from 10 CTO member countries in its inaugural year to as many as 26 participating countries.  The programe is administered through the school system in each island with the co-operation of this Ministry and each island’s Ministry of Education,” the official said.

The grand prize winner will be chosen by the Conde Nast Traveler Editorial Selection Committee and will have the essay reprinted in a future issue of the magazine.  In addition, the winner will receive a US$2000 award and a special certificate.  The two runners-up will each receive a US$500 award.
