Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Chinese Congress, Madame Fu Ying, recently paid Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Maxine McClean, a visit, and expressed her country’s appreciation for Barbados’ support over the years.

Senator McClean also expressed gratitude to the Government and people of China for their commitment and continued support to the Caribbean and Latin America, making special mention of financing for infrastructural projects.

She also made reference to China’s involvement in a number of local projects, including the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium, Sam Lord’s Castle and the Confucius Institute at the UWI Cave Hill Campus.

Chairperson Fu assured Senator McClean of China’s continued support, as her country had a “growing interest” in undertaking projects on the island, as well as within the region.

The two dignitaries also discussed climate change and its “unpredictable” effects on countries in the region, as well as the Paris Climate Change Agreement; globalisation and free trade; as well as maritime travel and trade.
