Making a fatality free festival a reality will be the focus of local road safety organizations this year.

This was disclosed by President of the Barbados Road Safety Association, Sharmane Roland Bowen, who explained that the Barbados National Road Safety Council had teamed up with the Royal Barbados Police Force to initiate this road safety campaign for Crop Over, in an effort to have zero road fatalities.

???Over the past four years, Barbados has experienced four road deaths for the six to seven week period of Crop Over,??? she said.

The Association President noted that the goal of the campaign was to ???draw awareness to the risk factors associated with unsafe driving, namely speed, distracted driving [and] fatigue???.

With the initiative further boosted by a road safety jingle featuring Cooper Dan, Mrs. Roland Bowen said she hoped their efforts would also bring awareness about tyre and cycle safety, as motorcycle related deaths were quite high.

She also stated that the Association would be presenting a Business Champion Award to Esso Barbados SRL for its dedication to work related road safety.

Mrs. Roland Bowen was one of the presenters at a series of seminars held to observe Occupational Safety and Health Week, which ended on July 4.
