The COVID-19 pandemic has been stressful for numerous persons because of its wide-ranging health, social and economic impacts.

It is usual for persons to experience a variety of physical and psychological responses when faced with the fear and anxiety of a stressful situation.

Psychologists from the Psychology Department of the Psychiatric Hospital have been advising that especially during this time, persons should engage in healthy practices that will aid in managing stress and anxiety.

Here are the recommendations:

  • Stay informed via credible sources ONLY, such as the Barbados Government Information Service and reputable media houses.

  • Also, be sure to take breaks from discussing and listening to information surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • Follow the guidelines set out by the Government of Barbados.

  • Stay focused on what you can control.

  • Be more empathetic to others, especially the most vulnerable.

  • Develop a home exercise regime. Exercise releases hormones, which relaxes the mind and body.

  • Reach out to friends and relatives via telephone or electronic means; connecting can help you and them.

  • Talk about how you feel with someone you trust.

  • If you find yourself alone, write about how you feel.

  • Stop, find a quiet place and take a deep breath. Relax. It rejuvenates the body.

  • Share a smile or take a good laugh. It is healthy and contagious.

  • Cater to your spiritual needs.

  • Eat healthily.  Water, fruits and vegetables are your best friends.

  • Practise self-compassion: speak positively to yourself; be kind to yourself; show yourself love.

The psychologists also encouraged persons to have a plan for where they could seek mental and physical health help, if needed.
