There are many noteworthy benefits to be derived from Government’s National Community Sports Training Programme.

Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, made this point today at the launch of the Training Programme in his Ministry’s Conference Room in Sky Mall.

During the launch, Mr. Lashley disclosed that the National Community Sports Training Programme was designed to provide a “range of benefits to participants”.

He explained that it would not only instill basic sporting techniques to the 1,000 young people participating, but would also seek to reduce the number of youth “engaging in delinquent behaviours” and, in so doing, attempt to lower national crime rates.

Additionally, the Minister noted that the programme, geared towards young people between 12 and 21, would create an opportunity for youth players to proceed from the community to national level in a purposeful manner.

He further added that with a focus on community engagement, participants would also be expected to complete a community service project geared towards teaching them civic responsibility, as part of the programme’s developmental process.

The programme, which is estimated to cost BDS $100,000, will engage 30 certified coaches who will train participants in football, cricket, netball, basketball, volleyball, road tennis, hockey and lawn tennis.

Participants will be exposed to 40 hours of drills over 13 weeks, beginning on Monday, November 6, and ending on Friday, January 12, 2018. At the end of the programme, participants will have an opportunity to showcase their skills in a sports rally that is scheduled for Saturday, January 13, 2018, at the Lester Vaughan School.
