Those motorists who park in spaces allocated for persons with disabilities (PWDs) will soon feel the full weight of the law.
This was hinted today by Minister of Social Care, Christopher Sinckler, during a meeting with Special Envoy for Persons with Disabilities, Roslyn Hurley. The Minister revealed that Government would shortly be bringing the relevant Bill to Parliament to address the perennial problem.
At today’s meeting, Ms Hurley listed several concerns and challenges that confronted persons with disabilities in Barbados. Prompted by Minister Sinckler to identify those concerns, she pointed out that the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities should be ratified and the contents of the White Paper on Persons with Disabilities implemented.?? She also said there was the ill-treatment of PWDs by family members, the need for them to be provided with psychological services, as well as assistance for persons who were newly disabled.
On the matter of the ratification of the Convention, Mr. Sinckler noted that Government had been making steady progress towards ratifying it;?? and that and the White Paper were closely aligned, and were being looked at simultaneously.??
Ms. Hurley has been the Special Envoy since 2003.
