Beachgoers and all sea craft operators are advised to exercise caution, as the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy (MMABE)is in the process of placing a number of buoys in several locations.

The buoys will create corridors, which will define routes of entry to, and exit from, areas of water sports activities.  An initial set of buoys has been positioned close to the Carlisle Bay Complex, Bay Street, diagonally opposite the Roman Catholic Church.

Buoys will also be placed along the west coast near Waves Hotel and Spa, Prospect, St. James. The ropes holding these buoys are stationed on either side with five anchors and are designed to move easily in adverse weather or in the event permission is granted for the hosting of regattas. Other areas where buoys have been placed include the Boatyard, Bay Street, and Pebbles Beach, both in St. Michael.

Amendments made to the Domestic Shipping Vessels Act, based on prior consultations, are now before Cabinet. Under the revised Act, water sports and jet ski operators will be required to use these corridors for this purpose only and cannot otherwise operate in the corridors.

This is to enable Barbadians to swim and sail safely, as well as to generally promote order while engaging in activities involving the jet ski and water sports communities.
