Minister of International Business and International Transport, George Hutson??

Maritime Week will be observed in Barbados next week, under the theme: "Life at Sea".

Activities will get under way on Sunday, September 19, with a Thanksgiving Service beginning at 9:00 a.m. at the St. James Parish Church. Minister of International Business and International Transport, George Hutson, will deliver remarks at the service.

From Monday, September 20, until Friday, September 24, Barbadians will gain greater insight into the history of the local maritime industry via a photographic???? display. During the week, photographs of ships, seafarers and fishing, from the past up to the present, will be displayed via the L.E.D. screen located on the front of the Broad Street branch of the Barbados National Bank.

On Tuesday, September 21, Minister Hutson, as well as ministry personnel are expected to participate in a tree planting ceremony in commemoration of Arbor Day, which will be observed the following day.

On???? Wednesday, September 22, Arbor Day, Barbadians will have an opportunity to see the Bridgetown Port through half-hourly guided bus tours of the historical site, as well as its cruise and cargo operations, from noon to 4:00 p.m.?? Patrons attending the tours are asked to assemble in the parking area of the administrative block on Harbour Road, Bridgetown.

Thursday, September 23, is World Maritime Day. For the occasion, officials of the International Transport Division will provide Barbadians with historical insight into the seafaring industry through a series of newspaper supplements.?? The Minister’s Message?? to celebrate the Day, as well as?? an article entitled: ???A Brief Outline of the?? Employment?? of Barbadian?? and West Indian Seafarers by the Harrison Line Shipping Company from 1925 to 1975′, by Shipping Superintendent, Walter Best will be among the contributions.

On Friday, September 24, the curtain will come down on the week with a Careers Showcase at the HMBS Pelican Barbados Coast Guard Headquarters, Spring Garden at 9:30 a.m. Minister Hutson will deliver the feature address to officially open the showcase which is expected to attract scores of secondary school students.

Exhibitors will include the Barbados Coast Guard, the Bridgetown Port Inc, the National Conservation Commission, The Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic, the Barbados Vocational Training Board, the Barbados Marine Trust, the Fisheries Division, the Royal Barbados Police Force (Marine Unit), the Ministry of the Environment, Water Resources and Drainage and CERMES.

At 11:30 a.m., patrons will learn first-hand about the seafaring industry, directly from the lips of past and present seafarers. Beginning at 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. respectively, the Barbados Coast Guard will host a paddle race and a Fish Fry, as well as a Karaoke competition beginning at 7:00 p.m. to which members of the public are invited.

On Saturday, September 25, members of the Maritime Week Planning Committee and their organisations are expected to join colleagues from the Environmental Protection Department as well as volunteers in a clean up at Morgan Lewis Beach in St. Andrew, to mark International Coastal Clean Up Day.
