A 73-member delegation from the French territory of Martinique will visit Barbados next week in an effort to learn more about this island’s agricultural and agro processing sector.

The group, made up of farmers, processors, teachers, researchers and two Members of Parliament, will visit the Ministry of Agriculture as well as local farms and markets and meet with various farmers’ organisations.

Each year the group visits a Caribbean island to learn about new agricultural technology and explore the probability of trade with their neighbours.

On Monday, November 12, the delegation will be divided into two groups, with one visiting the Southern Meets Abattoir at Balls Plantation, Christ Church, while the other will learn more about the Barbados Agricultural Development Marketing Corporation’s (BADMC) Cassava Project at the Grantley Adams Industrial Estate, Seawell, Christ Church.

These tours will run from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m., while from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. senior representatives of the group will meet and greet staff and officials of the Ministry of Agriculture at Graeme Hall, Christ Church.

On Tuesday, November 13, the delegation will travel to the Sugar Cane Breeding Station at Groves, St. George from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., while the next stop will be the Greenland Livestock Station, Greenland, St. Andrew, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Next on the agenda from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m., one group will tour the Sustainable Barbados Recycling Centre at Vaucluse, St. Thomas, while the other will visit the BADMC land lease project at Spring Hall, St. Lucy.

On Wednesday, November 14, the first group will visit the Bridgetown Fish Market followed by the water treatment facility IONCIS at Spring Garden, St. Michael, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., while from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. the second group will travel to IONCIS and then to the Bridgetown market.

From 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. one group will tour HIPAC Limited and Supercentre, both at Fontabelle, Bridgetown, while the second will go to the Roberts Feed Plant at Lower Estate, St. George.

Following this tour, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m., the delegation will meet with various farmers’ organisations at the Barbados Agricultural Society, ???The Grotto’, Beckles Road, St. Michael.
