Primary school children from the north of the island will get an opportunity to showcase their creativity when the Maurice Byer Polyclinic group hosts its fifth Annual Poem & Poster Competitions.

The competitions, which are being coordinated by nurses from the polyclinic, will target students nine to 11 years, to heighten awareness about diabetes, methods of prevention, control, treatment and complications from the disease.

Sixteen schools are expected to participate. They are: All Saints, Boscobel, Roland Edwards, Leacock’s Private, St. Joseph, St. Bernard’s, St. Elizabeth, St. Silas, Gordon Greenidge, St. James, St. Albans, St. Lucy, Half Moon Fort, Selah, Ignatius Byer, Chalky Mount and St. Andrew’s Primary.

Each school may submit a maximum of two poems related to diabetes, its causes, treatments and complications. Submissions must be no longer than three verses, and each verse should be no more than 10 lines.?? They should be typed on one side of paper measuring 8 ?? x 11 inches. In addition four copies of each poem must be submitted, one of which will be used for display.

Entries should have no other markings, except the poem and its title, and should be accompanied by the attached entry form.

Poems will be judged in their written form and by performance, and awardees’ entries will be submitted to the NIFCA Literary Arts Competition.

For the poster competition, students are allowed to use coloured pencils, crayons, prints or any other media.

Posters should be no larger than 30" x 30" square, and the following information should be attached: names of student(s), school, and age group.

Schools will be allowed to submit only two posters, accompanied by an official entry form.

Prizes will be given for the most comical piece, most creative, most colourful, and most original submissions, as well as for the one with the most educational content.

Winning entries will be forwarded to the NIFCA Literary Arts Competition.??????

The deadline for the submission of poems is Friday, June 4, while posters must be sent by Monday, June 7. Both must be submitted to the Maurice Byer Polyclinic by 4:30 p.m. and should be addressed to Health Sister and Coordinator of the competition, Nurse Marcia Beckles-Moore.

Contestants are expected to present the poem before a panel of judges at The Family Church, Little Battaley’s, St. Peter, on Friday, June 11, at 10:00 a.m.
