There was a festive atmosphere yesterday but the message of employment’s importance was not lost, as hundreds turned out to take part in the Barbados Workers Union’s (BWU) May Day Parade.
It started from the Garrison Savannah, travelling through the City and ended at Browne’s Beach. The parade saw representatives from the tripartite of government, private sector and unions, with persons carrying placards which mentioned the need for training and development for employees Participants also wore t-shirts emblazoned with the Day’s slogan "Strengthening the Bonds" and encouraging persons to "Train Today for a Better Pay Day".
To honour those who had contributed to the labour movement throughout the years, a ceremony was held at the base of the Sir Frank Walcott statue at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Culloden Road.?? Labour representatives including the BWU General Secretary, Sir Roy Trotman and Minister of Labour, Senator Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, laid wreaths in recognition of the efforts made by that stalwart and others who had helped the movement’s development.
Members of the public who lined the streets were offered pamphlets on labour legislation and training opportunities.
