A call has gone out to the news media to be more proactive in delivering messages that would encourage members of the public to acquire technical and vocational skills as a means for income generation.

Minister of Labour and Social Security, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, made this appeal to the media to help create an awareness about the economic potential and individual fulfilment that could result from skills development.

Urging the media to be a part of "this radical move to change the way we think and work," the Labour Minister pointed out the target groups she hoped to reach.

"I must implore the media to help me get this message across to the young persons with no skills or academic qualifications; those young people who have more skills than they realise after many years of working and can now channel those to help generate wealth," she said.

Dr. Byer Suckoo also urged them to highlight the 30 young skilled students, who would be participating in the upcoming WorldSkills Barbados Competition 2012. The three-day event is scheduled for March 7 and 8 at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic and March 9 at the Barbados Community College’s PomMarine Institute.
