Members of the Disabled community in Barbados will next month take the spotlight when the ‘Month of the Disabled’ is observed, under the theme: ‘Promoting Equality, Dignity & Participation’.

Several activities, including community outreach efforts, are being planned by the National Disabilities Unit, as well as other agencies representing the disabled community to mark the observation.

The month will officially get underway, next Wednesday, March 4, at 10:00 a.m. with the launch of a ‘Show them Love’ public awareness campaign for children with disabilities at United Nations House.

Minister of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment, Urban and Rural Development, Christopher Sinckler, will deliver the feature address to launch the programme which seeks to raise public awareness about one of the most vulnerable groups in society – persons with disabilities; particularly babies to 18 years old. Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Tom Olsen, will also address the launch.

On Sunday, March 1, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Sharon Moravian Church, Jackson, St. Thomas the Barbados Council of the Disabled will also host a Church Service to mark the month.

Other activities will be publicised as the month of celebrations gets underway.
