A week of activities has been planned by the Outreach Committee of the Psychiatric Hospital to commemorate World Mental Health Day, October 10.

Under the theme “Making Mental Health A Global Priority”, the week will be celebrated from Sunday, October 5 to Friday, October 10.

Staff and caregivers will begin the week with divine worship at All Souls Anglican Church, Bank Hall Cross Road at 8:00 a.m. Later in the evening, there will be a football match on the grounds of the hospital, at Black Rock, from 3:30 p.m.

According to coordinator and Nursing Sister Althea Clarke, the theme helps to bring awareness to the fact that living in a global village calls for an understanding of what constitutes good mental health and mental ill-health among people of all diversities and cultures, who will bring with them, as they move across regions, issues that must be addressed.”

She added: “We need to be more sensitive and understand that any of us can become mentally ill…; try to get help for others rather than make fun at them and tell yourself that it can be me at any point in time.”

The week will also see visits to primary and secondary schools on Tuesday, October 7 and Thursday, October 9; Wednesday, October 8, is patient and staff sports day, at the hospital.

For World Mental Health Day, Friday, October 10, there will be an Open Day at the Psychiatric Hospital beginning at 10:00 a.m. bringing the curtain down on activities for the week.

Members of the public are invited to participate in the events for Mental Health Week.
