Some senior public servants will soon undergo a mentoring and coaching programme as Government continues to equip workers with the necessary skills to improve themselves and the public sector.
Executive Director of the Barbados Institute of Management and Productivity (BIMAP), Dr. Sonia Greenidge-Franklyn, disclosed that her organisation had been engaged by government to implement the training.
Dr. Greenidge-Franklyn made the comments recently during the closing ceremony of an intensive four-week Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS) training programme on Improving Professionalism in the Office. The training session was facilitated by BIMAP.
Emphasising that good customer service and office professionalism was extremely important in the public and private sectors, she pointed out that BIMAP interacted with a variety of public organisations and the service meted out was always good.
"It is only on the odd occasion that you will get service that is inferior and, to me, the public service is just a reflection of the whole society. So, when people cry down public servants, and say that they don’t get good service, that is a myth…," she surmised.
She praised the BGIS, saying it "has given excellent service to Barbados throughout the years". She continued: "We see the programmes you do on television and they are comparable to international programmes, so we are proud of you."
Dr. Greenidge-Franklyn added that she hoped the training would be expanded to other departments in the public service.
Administrative Officer at the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), Suzette Harper, commended the organisation for undergoing the training, stressing that it was a step in the right direction.
Acting Chief Information Officer, Sharon Lynch, said the training was useful and urged the staff to continue improving their professionalism. She disclosed that the BGIS’ next step would be to work on its new strategic plan.
The course was partially sponsored by the NUPW and over 40 persons received training.
