An effort to uplift young men in the community will be realised this Saturday, July 21, when "Giving Back," a mentoring programme for males ages 11 to 16 who reside in the constituency of St. James Central, is launched.
"Giving Back," a pilot project comprising 10 participating mentors, parents and mentees, will be conducted during the period July 21 to November 29 and will be facilitated by Project Coordinator, Johnathan Yearwood; Psychologist (Barbados Community College), Lawrence Clarke and Senior Education Officer (Ministry of Education), Pat Warner.
According to the Project Coordinator, "Young people in today’s society are experiencing more transient lifestyles, greater anonymity and detachment from their communities, mediocre standards for success, and increased pressures to attain higher education."
He continued: "In addition, young people are often at the leading edge of social change, and upward trends in alcohol and illicit drug use by young males constitute an important social development in Barbados.?? These and other challenges have fuelled a demand for quality, long-term youth mentoring programmes which connect youth to supportive, caring individuals, who help provide guidance and stability to them, as they face adolescence."
Mentors and their mentees will undergo training as a first step this Saturday, July 21, at MDG Corporate Services, ???Little Chimney,’ Pishon Court, Clerpark, St. James, from 9:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
Minister of International Business and International Transport, George Huston will deliver the feature address at the opening ceremony of the Mentoring programme, while Project Coordinator, Johnathan Yearwood and mentor and CEO of MDG Corporate Services, Michael Grimes, will deliver remarks.??
