The youth, particularly those considering career options, are being encouraged to see the aviation industry as a viable vocation.

Minister of International Business and International Transport, George Hutson, again repeated calls for the youth to become involved in the industry, as he addressed a flag raising ceremony and career showcase at the Grantley Adams International Airport recently.

"As we look to the future and the continued development of aviation in Barbados, we have to invest in our young people and provide [the] necessary training and opportunities for them. In this way, our youth can feel justly proud in contributing to and carrying forward the development of our beautiful country, Barbados," he said.

Noting that he was pleased to see so many young people in attendance, Mr. Hutson said aviation offered exciting career opportunities. He told the students that they could find jobs as air traffic controllers, flight crew, engineers, mechanics and security inspectors.

"There are also benefits of indirect employment in areas of mail, cargo, tourism, and aviation fuel supply, as well as construction companies that build airport facilities, the manufacturing of goods and the provision of services in airport retail outlets. Furthermore, there are beneficial spin-offs to air transport support organisations such as banks, restaurants and retail outlets," Mr. Hutson pointed out.

This year, students from the Christ Church Foundation School, the Deighton Griffith Secondary School, Harrison College and the St. Bartholomew Primary School were in attendance at the ceremony and showcase.

They had the opportunity to tour the GAIA facilities including the airport control tower, and observe how the planes landed and took off, and tour the fire station.
