Barbados is looking at ways to capitalize on its agriculture niches and reduce this island’s food import bill.

Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Trade, Sandra Husbands, alluded to these objectives during a recent courtesy call by Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), Manuel Otero, and Representative of the IICA Delegation in Barbados, Ena Harvey, at the Ministry’s headquarters on Culloden Road, St. Michael.

The officials discussed cooperation in projects for Black Belly Sheep production and bee-keeping. The Minister noted that bee-keeping, in particular, had “potential for earnings” because Barbados’ imports of honey and its by-products were the highest in the region.

She added that Government was seeking to engage strategic partners to enable professional management of large-scale farm productions outside the island, explaining that this was to create more opportunities for Barbadian farmers.
