Minister of International Business and International Transport, George Hutson, ??has called for more young people to invest in careers in civil aviation.

He made these comments today, as he officially opened a careers showcase, as part of activities to mark Civil Aviation Week, at the Grantley Adams International Airport.

Mr. Hutson said : "In this competitive world, in order to ensure that we sustain a high standard of service well beyond the immediate future, we have to invest in our youth and provide the necessary training opportunities for them."

He stressed that this was important, so that they could feel "justly proud in contributing to, and carrying forward the development of Barbados".

The Minister of International Transport cautioned the students to start thinking about their career paths and to obtain the requisite subjects that would propel them towards these chosen fields.

"The Civil Aviation sector is a dynamic industry that provides rewarding, stimulating and long-term career prospects. As Minister with responsibility for Civil Aviation, I believe it is necessary to put a framework in place to ensure that persons desirous of finding employment in Civil Aviation are fully cognisant of the opportunities and training possibilities," he asserted.

Pointing out that some financial assistance is offered through the Ministry of Education’s National Development Scholarship in Aviation Management. He added that over the last 36 years his ministry had a training programme in place for air traffic controllers, supervisors and security personnel.

He pointed out that over the years, the Civil Aviation Department had worked diligently to set standards of excellence for which Barbados was known "throughout the Caribbean and further afield".

The careers showcase was organised to increase the awareness and interest of young people about careers in the field.

Some 20 organisations offered information to students from eight of the island’s secondary schools.

The theme for Civil Aviation week is Civil Aviation: A Pillar in the Barbados Economy."
