Minister of Trade, Industry and Commerce, George Hutson

Barbadians who damage the island’s ecosystem by illegal dumping came under heavy criticism from a Government Minister.

Minister of Trade, Industry and Commerce, George Hutson, said he was appalled by the number of derelict vehicles that were dumped in the Jack-in-the-Box Gully, St. Thomas, in cul-de-sacs, and other isolated areas across the island.

He made these observations while delivering the feature address at the recent Barbados Motor Show.  The event, held at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, was put on by Premier Event Services Inc. in conjunction with Barbados Motoring News.

Mr. Hutson said the improper disposal of abandoned vehicles not only disrupted the island’s water supply, but also caused environmental degradation, through the release of hazardous materials.

In light of this, the Minister has urged Barbadians to take pride in their habitat and desist from this practice.  “This [illegal dumping] must stop.  As a country, and as individuals in communities, we must be aware of and protect our environment.  Nothing is more unsightly than to walk through communities and see abandoned vehicles with bush and trees growing out of them,” he declared.

Mr. Hutson advised Barbadians to treat their surroundings with respect and not spoil the beauty of the environment with unsightly garbage.
