Minister of Creative Economy, Culture and Sports, John King, believes that Barbados’ creative and cultural sector is a vital element for delivering economic growth.

Speaking recently at the opening of the Caribbean Fine Arts Fair held at the Grand Salle, Central Bank of Barbados, Minister King pointed out that the Visual Arts sector, in particular, was one that had enormous potential for growth, which Barbados was yet to fully explore.

“During the last couple of months, I have witnessed the explosion of pop up art galleries, due in part to the efforts of young artists such as Artist Alliance.  This augurs well for the development of the sector,” he said.

He noted that there was a need for more cultural events, not only to provide an outlet for existing artists, but also to heighten interest in the arts.

“This is one of the objectives of Barbados’ National Cultural Policy, as we strive to attain a higher level of cultural awareness among Barbadians,” he stated.

Minister King noted that the exhibition also presented an opportunity for young persons to attend the sessions, at which they could see the arts as a viable career path.

“I am aware that some of the art on display, represents works from our secondary schools.  I commend the organisers for such an initiative. These young minds will provide us with a new perspective, as vibrancy and dynamism certainly are expected from our youth,” he said.

The Caribbean Fine Art Fair celebrates the important contribution of Caribbean artists and the role that Caribbean art plays in the international art arena.
