Barbados??? Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Maxine McClean, held talks recently with Deputy Secretary of Foreign Affairs in New Zealand, Ms. Andrea Smith.

During the meeting, which was held at the Ministry???s Culloden Road headquarters, the two officials discussed matters of mutual interest. These included security issues, climate change, agriculture and education.

Senator McClean explained that security was a major issue for this island, highlighting the challenges of illegal drugs and weapons.

In relation to climate change, she pointed out that Barbados was focused on the need to address the effects of climate change, as well as maintain its renewable energy agenda.??The Minister also gave an update on the celebrations to commemorate Barbados??? 50 years of independence.

Ms. Smith noted that there were many areas in which this country and New Zealand could collaborate as the two countries faced similar challenges. The Deputy Secretary of Foreign Affairs also updated the Minister on New Zealand???s flag referendum which began on March 3.
