Minister of Health, Donville Inniss??

Minister of Health, Donville Inniss, has apologised for the length of time it has taken to demolish the Fairchild Street Market. But, he lauded the Markets Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Public Works for doing their part to ensure that no vending has taken place at the market since it was condemned some years ago.

During a tour of the market today, Mr. Inniss said the issue of cost could have played a major role in the delay to demolish the derelict structure. He explained that when Government condemned a building, it meant that the building was not suited for habitation. This, the Health Minister pointed out, had been achieved since no one was operating there.

"We would all like to know that once a building is condemned, it is removed the next day but that is not always possible. Sometimes, it is a matter of cost and other logistical arrangements. I would like to apologise for the building still being here but, at least, we know there is no vending taking place inside the building.

"I think the Ministry of Agriculture’s Markets Division should be commended along with the Ministry of Public Works for coming inside quickly and gutting the place. They really came in and removed all of the internal structures so as to ensure nobody got in; they locked the doors and secured it as best as possible," Mr. Inniss said.

He added that Government was ready for the next stage – taking down the existing structure and ensuring that no vending took place until the major infrastructural works were completed.
