More Barbadians could find employment in Canada and the United States of America (USA) in the future as part of the External Employment Programmes.

Minister of Labour, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, left the island over the weekend to visit these Programmes in Canada and USA.

She will meet with liaison officers, employees and employers of the Canadian Farm Labour Programme, the Low Skilled (Hotel) Programme in Canada, the H2B (Non-Agricultural) Workers’ Programme and the J1 Programme in the USA.

The Labour Minister is also expected to promote Barbados as a supply country to potential employers in both nations, and have discussions with those who have already expressed a desire to employ Barbadians.

The programmes are said to contribute positively to this island’s economy, with officials reporting over $6 million in remittances since their inception.

Over 200 persons were contracted to work in the External Employment Programmes for the period April 2009 to March 2010. saustin@barbados.gov.bb
