Minister of Sports, Stephen Lashley, leaves the island today to lead an official delegation to the 19th Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Delhi, India, from October 3 to 14.
The other members of the group are Assistant Director of the National Sports Council, Mona Alleyne, and Sports Development Officer in the Ministry of Sports, Stephen Rowe.
Mr. Lashley will also participate in the Fifth Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting next Monday, October 4, at the Taj Palace Hotel. The ministers are expected to hear about "Sport for Development and Peace", "the World Anti-Doping Agency Overview and Youth Education Initiative" and an update on the United Nations activities in the area of sport for development and peace, among other issues.
??Additionally, the Barbados delegation will take part in a strategy forum to formulate the way forward as it relates to the roles of the National Olympic Associations and their respective governments.
The Minister is also expected to attend the Seventh LG ICC Awards Ceremony, next Wednesday, October 6, in Bangalore, where the outstanding achievements of world cricketers and cricket teams will be recognised.
Meanwhile, 22 officials and 35 athletes from Barbados are already in India to compete at the games in the areas of track and field, badminton, boxing, cycling, netball, shooting, table tennis, tennis and weightlifting.
Approximately 7,200 athletes are expected to take part in the Commonwealth Games, which is an international, multi-sport event, held every four years. It was first held in Canada in 1930.????saustin@barbados.gov.bb
