Minister of Sports, Stephen Lashley, has pledged Government’s continued support to local athletes, while encouraging them to "fully apply" themselves to the tasks at hand.

He expressed this commitment recently while visiting the Barbadian sportspersons at the Athletes’ Village in New Dehli, India, where they are competing at the Commonwealth Games.

Mr. Lashley, who is accompanied by Assistant Director of the National Sports Council, Mona Alleyne and Sports Development Officer, Stephen Rowe, met with the members of the Barbadian contingent, led by Chef de Mission, Cammie Burke.

They were given a tour of the Village, including the dining area. The Minister said afterwards: "The athletes assured me that they were comfortable and focussed on doing their best in the various events. I was able to see first-hand the Village where all the athletes are staying and came away feeling rather satisfied."

He stressed that security at the Village and at all the sporting venues he had visited was "extremely tight".

??The Village is home to some 7,000 athletes for the duration of the two-week long games, which started on Sunday, October 3.

In addition to participating in the recently held Fifth Commonwealth Sports Ministers Meeting, Mr. Lashley attended the Commonwealth Games, where he has seen the local athletes compete at netball, table tennis,??boxing, badminton, cycling and track and field. saustin@barbados.gov.bb
