Minister of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, was recently presented with the book Listen to the Hills, the newest work by noted author and cultural icon, Dr. Cynthia Wilson at the Division of Family and Youth, Mall Internationale, Haggatt Hall, St. Michael.
The "fictionalised" memoir chronicles two years in the life of a Barbadian young woman, Cyrilene Sargeant, who has just left secondary school to attend the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, on a scholarship.
Mr. Lashley said he was honoured not only to be a recipient of the book but also because the author presented it to him in person.
"I will read it in my quiet moments. Writing a book takes time and perseverance and I compliment you for staying the course. It is my honour and privilege to accept this book," he told Dr. Wilson.
The Minister noted that, in his opinion, the book could be used in schools given its material and the inclusion of a glossary that ensures the reader understands the meaning of words and phrases. In reminiscing about his days at the Lodge School, Mr. Lashley indicated that as a student there, he did not have access to many local or Caribbean writers and it was good that Dr. Wilson had provided Barbados and the Caribbean with such material.
He suggested that the story be reproduced as a play, allowing the characters to be visibly captured and brought to life on stage. Dr. Wilson agreed and indicated that a movie would also be a great compliment to the book.
"Listen to the Hills" is available at all local book stores.
