Government and the organisers of the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Athletic Championships (BSSAC) and the National Primary Schools’ Athletic Championship (NAPSAC) are still trying to ensure that those sports meets are held this school year.

To this end, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, and his colleague in the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ronald Jones, met today with representatives of both Ministries, NAPSAC, BSSAC, the National Sports Council, the Royal Barbados Police Force and the University of the West Indies.

At the end of the hour-long meeting, which was held at the Ministry of Education, Elsie Payne Complex, Constitution Road, Mr. Lashley stated: "We have made progress in exploring what the issues are, highlighting those issues and placing the discussion where it ought to be… The organisers of NAPSAC and BSSAC have gone away, [and] they will have discussions and come back to us within two weeks with recommendations regarding the convening of these two track meets.

"I remain very hopeful though that we will be able to move towards some definitive position on ensuring that we could have these very critical sporting events held in Barbados."

The Minister pointed out that the track at the National Stadium should be completed in May, but the exact date had to be confirmed by the technical consultants who were currently working on it.

"Once that date is identified and provided by the National Sports Council to the organisers, it will then allow them to come up with a number of scenarios which will have to factor into the various events and examinations occupying the attention of the various schools," he explained.

Mr. Lashley described the talks as "cordial and very frank" and stressed that good progress had been made.
