The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy (MMABE) has advised all fishing vessels to return to port before the national pause, which takes effect from Wednesday, February 3, and runs until Wednesday, February 17.

However, only designated persons will be allowed to check on the fishing vessels during that period.

Owners or registered caretakers of fishing vessels should submit the names of the designated persons who will be checking on these vessels to the Fisheries Division via fisheries.division@barbados.gov.bb, immediately.

In a statement from the Ministry, it said this move was necessary to facilitate the sale of fishermen’s catches, as all fish markets, fishing landing sites and sheds, and all Government-run locations to supply or trade in fish will be closed during this period.

Minister of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy, Kirk Humphrey said: “The closure of the market is a necessary step to help in the fight against COVID-19 in Barbados. It is a measure put in place to protect the staff, fishermen, vendors and general public. Of course, we will continue to work with the fisherfolk during the national pause.”

However, crews returning to home port are asked to note that if persons on board feel unwell; have a fever or cough; are experiencing difficulties breathing; or have any COVID-19 related symptoms, should separate themselves from other members; self-quarantine; and call the COVID-19 hotline at 536-4500, or seek medical attention.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy urges everyone to follow all protocols during the period of national pause.
