Through the efforts of the Bureau of Social Policy, Research and Planning, which operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Social Care, in collaboration with Variety, the Children’s Charity, two of this island’s charities are now better able to assist the charges whom they have taken under their wing.

Earlier today the Young Women’s Christian Association’s (YWCA) Breakfast Club and the Loving Arms Organisation received a number of items from Minister Steve Blackett at the Warrens Office Complex.

Minister Blackett said that the presentation was a result of the Empowerment Fair held last year to acknowledge the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, as well as his Ministry’s desire "to make an even more tangible contribution to the human resource development of this country."?? He added that "the lack of amenities and basic needs…hinder persons from attaining their fullest potential."

While presenting a heavy duty fruit and vegetable extractor to the YWCA’s president, Marilyn Rice-Bowen, the Minister noted: "Proper nutrition represents a major plank in overcoming some of the hurdles that hinder an individual’s progress…therefore I anticipate that this donation will help to improve the nutritional value of the breakfast, and enhance the children’s physical, cognitive and academic performances."

The Social Care Minister also handed over a variety of nutritional, educational and recreational items, along with a non-perishable food hamper, to the Chairman and Founder of the Loving Arms Organisation, Zeta Adamson. He lauded the organisation, which like the YWCA, "has touched many Barbadian families."

??"We in the Ministry… support any and all efforts aimed at improving the lives – present and future – of our younger and more vulnerable citizens," Minister Blackett affirmed, labeling the initiative as "a step in the right direction, towards securing the health, wealth and future of our nation’s children."
