A National Development Scholarship in Maritime Studies could be on the cards if officials from the Ministry of International Business and International Transport have their way.

Word of this has come from Minister of International Business and International Transport, George Huston, who has pointed out that in terms of employment, "spin-offs from maritime transport are numerous".

Addressing the launch of Maritime Week, which gets under way this Sunday,?? Minister Hutson said,?? in addition to its?? Marine Operations?? course, the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP) was undergoing an exercise to upgrade its facilities to offer basic courses to the standard of the International Maritime Organisation’s International Convention on Training, Certification and?? Watchkeeping for seafarers.

"In this regard, this Ministry will request that a National Development Scholarship be awarded in maritime studies. Indeed, I?? look forward to the day when a Barbadian is a captain and or chief engineer on board a cruise or cargo ship," the Minister said.

He said that as Minister responsible for International Transport, he was challenge to provide employment opportunities wherever they existed.

"And certainly, with the remarkable growth in cruise tourism I hope to identify during the course of the [Maritime] Week, opportunities immediately available in the industry," he promised.

Minister Hutson noted that?? on-site recruitment?? for positions on cruise and cargo ships would be a major feature of the?? upcoming Maritime Week Career Showcase slated to be held next Friday, September 25, at the Barbados Coast Guard Headquarters.
